What’s in this pastor’s bag

What I carry around in my backpack everyday as a pastor

So, there it is – my everyday carry bag. At this point, my bag is basically a part of me. I go almost everywhere with it. People know me by my bag.

This particular backpack by Herschel is about a year old now. My previous backpack went with me for a good 7 or 9 years before finally wearing out. While this one is slightly smaller, doesn’t have a side water-bottle holder, and only has 2 compartments – it does look slightly classier and more professional. I figured it was time I started looking a little classier.

In the picture on the left you can see what I bring with me.

  • On the top left is a felt/cloth backpack organizer. You can find it on Amazon here. This thing has been a life changer. Because my current bag only has 2 compartments, this gives me lots of little spaces to slip things in. Everything you see in the picture has a place in that organizer. The nice thing about it is when I am using my backpack for a hike or to stuff groceries into, I just take the organizer out, and I’m good to go.
  • Next, of course, is my maroon (probably fake) leather ESV bible. I love the size for carrying around. I’ve used this one off and on for probably 10 years. It’s not what I use for study or even my daily devotional time (for that I use either this one or this one), but it’s great for on the go.
  • Next to the Bible is my wooden communion kit. It’s what I bring to shut-in visits and hospital calls. I actually don’t carry it with me everyday, but I was at the nursing home yesterday so it was in my bag.
  • To the left of that are my Apple Airpods. I got them as a gift two Christmas’s ago and I love them. I use them when I’m running or working out, listening to podcasts, and even in the office when I’m trying to be low-key.
  • Below that is my leather Travelers Notebook with my Christian Planner and Prayer Journal, as well as a few other blank notebooks.
  • To the right of that is a stack of blank index cards. I use them to write random lists, prayer requests people share, or other ideas that pop into mind.
  • To the right of the index cards is my pencil holder with one of my blue Bible highlighters. I also got this as a gift. I didn’t think I’d really use it, but it’s a lot nicer than having all my pens/pencils scattered throughout my bag.
  • After that is my laptop. I believe it’s a 2016 MacBook Pro. I’ve used Macs since 2010 and wouldn’t go back at this point, but that’s because I really do not want to learn a new operating system all over again. I’m definitely not religious about all things Mac/Apple though.
  • At the bottom is my new leather Valley of Vision prayer book that I got for Christmas. I love the quality of this edition. I flip through it often, because, well, the prayers are awesome.
  • Finally you can see my Kleenex and mints. Because sometimes my breath smells like coffee and I need to blow my nose.
